Another Sunday in Vienna

We leave our flat and see that the light is brilliant:
blue sky, copper- green domes, pastel-coloured houses.

On a working day you don't notice how many churches there are in the center of the city.
But today we do:
200 meters to St. Stephen's Cathedral, 300 meters to St. Peter's Church.

And as usual, there is a coffee house at the corner with outdoor tables in the warm season.

700 meters - Maria am Gestade.

And so many of the typical houses of Vienna's bourgeoisie. The rental apartments are passed on within families from generation to generation and therefore it's nearly impossible to find them on the market.

And right in the middle is Vienna's most elegant and socially accepted brothel, Hotel Orient.

900 meters to Votivkirche.

The old AKH, Allgemeines Krankenhaus, once Vienna's largest central hospital, has become a recreation area now with inns, meadows, art galleries, book shops. As the University is nearby, it is also a campus area. Something for connoisseurs!

The famous Wiener Schnitzel :D

Not far from Burgtheater, Rathaus, Parliament and the headquarters of the Socialist Party (SPÖ) is Cafe Landtmann where politicians meet journalists and intellectuals, artists and bankers.

When we pass the SPÖ building, we think that it might have been an illusion to believe that the time of political personality cult was over...
The gentleman in red will probably be the new chancellor of the Republic end of September.

Here you see two typical representatives of the insubordinate voters
*gg*

Finally we take a rest in nearby Volksgarten.

Thanks for joining us on our walk!
This time my hubby has selected the tour and the subjects!
But I paid the bill!

Maria, I am so thrilled you got on my blog! My husband was in the Army and then the Air Force, and that has a lot to do with why we moved so much, but not entirely....you are quite right, Americans tend to move around A LOT! Have you ever visited in the States? Would love to show you around some time in my own little corner of this place! And, Vienna looks GORGEOUS!!!!! I have to go there some time! It really is a beautiful city, but also you are a wonderful photographer. All my best--visit me anytime!

I love these tours of yours. Beautiful old buildings, well maintained. These are what we call "European" but why is the brothel called "Orient" Who services the brothel? That is a giant billboard for a politician.

Hi maria!
I love seeing the sceney of Vienna's street.
it's very beautiful!
In Tokyo there are too many buildings. So I can't enjoy seeing scenery. I wish I lived in Vienna!!
I want you to update those pictures from now on, too.
I always look forward to seeing them!

Dear Ayamlin, I am happy that you like our trips through Vienna. For me it is a great pleasure to post our trips, because I look much closer at my city and I actually see many things I would not have noticed otherwise.
We are planning to make a "Jugendstil" tour. This is a stilistic highlight around 1900 which is significantly influenced by Japanese culture. Yapanese culture was very much admired by Viennese artists because of its simple elegance and its nobleness and refinement.

Hallo ces, thanks for visiting. What you call "European" style would be called "Gründerzeit" style in Vienna. These bourgeois houses were built around 1880 to 1910. After World War II these houses were really black from smoke etc but in the last decades they were carefully renovated.
I think that Hotel Orient has it's name from the Arabic tales "One tousand and one nights", the story of Sheherazade who saves her life by telling endless tales to the cruel king. Originally these tales were not children's tales but erotic tales (see wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Thousand_and_One_Nights )
Besides, you associate luxury and lust with the Orient.
It was a great hallo when ten years agon the Orient opened and invited also married couples or lovers to come... :)
